Steve Reich speaks about the relation between his musical works and musique concrète as well as electronic music. When he composed his first electroacoustic work (It’s Gonna Rain) in 1964, he knew of the works of Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, and Luc Ferrari but he was attracted only by the material that they used, not their aesthetic. After this first part of the interview, he presents his point of view concerning the relation between popular music and “serious” music and his interest in sampling.
