Mycenae-Alpha (1978) was the first electroacoustic work to be composed entirely on the UPIC system. UPIC is a tool for graphics-based composition of electroacoustic music. Alongside a technical description of the computer program, the author analyses Xenakis’s piece through the study of the graphic score realised on the UPIC system and tries to connect it to mathematical theories used by the composer. Xenakis did not directly apply his mathematical method whilst drawing the sounds but instead did so whilst conceiving the structure.
