The author presents a short history of sound synthesis drawing on film. Artists drew their sounds’ waveforms directly on film. He explains the particular techniques starting in the 1920s with the birth of the talking film and analyses the works of the important film-makers Rudolf Pfenninger, Oskar Fischinger, John and James Whitney and Norman McLaren.
