Abstract:

Bruno Bossis develops his theory on “vocalité artificielle” (the artifical voice) using the model/portrait dualism of a painter. Through examples of works by Gérard Grisey, Philippe Manoury, Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Luciano Berio, Cathy Berberian, Steve Reich, Pierre Boulez, Jonathan Harvey, Alexandro Viñao and Roger Reynolds, he analyses the characteristics and musical use of the mirror’s two sides in comparing his theory (the use of “vocalité artificielle” like a natural voice) to the notion of the virtual voice (an enactment of the voice).
