Based on Schaefferian theory, the researchers of the MIM (Laboratoire Musique et Informatique de Marseille) developed the UST (Temporal Semiotics Units), a method to analyse music. Through two examples (Dutilleux’s Quartet and an extract from Reibel’s Variation en étoile), the author presents how to use this method to analyse the function of sound objects.
