Abstract:

In this essay, the author discusses the ramifications of cross-cultural musical sampling, the ethical and political issues about authorship and ownership, with a particular focus on ‘western’ musicians who sample ‘non-western’ musicians. He discusses how issues of cultural borrowing and appropriation are reconfigured in the era of digital sampling technology.
