Ca. 1988, the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) was considered the standard system for the digital representation of musical events. In this article, the author concentrates on known dysfunctions of MIDI from a purely musical point of view, paying particular attention to performance capture, the digital representation of musical control, and synthesiser control.
