Abstract:

In this article, the authors examine aspects of instrument control and controllers. They discuss the reasons for wanting new, programmable instruments controllers and explore the idea that an instrument controller is both a measurer of gestural parameters and a mapper from gestural to sound control parameters. They use results from psychoacoustic and ergonomic research to determine requirements for sensing and representing common gestural and sound control parameters. They discuss some of the existing sensing technologies and they also present the design and implementation of the VideoHarp hardware and software.
