In this article, the author discusses the implications of a new way of performing music that has been made possible by real-time computer information processing. He briefly reviews the characteristics of his interactive performance system - the Conductor program and its associated device, the radio baton - in order to contextualise his speculative reflection on the possibilities, problems and questions raised by computer programs that are designed to aid performers in achieving expressive performances.
