Abstract:

In this article, the author examines various manifestations of the field of computer music - its technology, its mode of production, its discourses - with respect to some of the recognised characteristics of the modern and post-modern. He hopes to bring into focus some contradictory aspects of the practice of computer music, at the same time suggesting ways in which the field could seek to redefine itself in the future.
