In this chapter, the author notes that the culture of sampling has problematised the acousmatic approach, increasing the likelihood of hybrid forms which owe their existence to the collision of different musical worlds, different disciplines, different modes of thought and understanding. He presents a survey of issues which impact on artistic production and new signifying practices in general, and connects these to shifts in thought and practice relating to electroacoustic music; identifying a range of broad cultural and attitudinal shifts which may be regarded as establishing the preconditions for ‘hybrid thought’ and uncovering a few of these hybridising tendencies in electroacoustic practice.
