In this paper, the author discusses the dysfunctions of MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) from a musical point of view, paying particular attention to performance capture, the digital representation of musical control, and synthesiser control. This paper offers the current reader a historical perspective on the early years of MIDI technology.
