Abstract:

In this article, the author offers his opinion on several ideas that were expressed by John Myhill in a 1978 International Computer Music conference talk. In particular, problems concerning the meaning of particular pairs of oppositions; stochasticity/determinism, periodicity/non-periodicity, and culture-rooted/trans-cultural facts, in relation to stylistic coherence and the nature of music. The author discusses the musical meaning of formal procedures used in the field of computer aided composition, attempting to clarify the role of the computer in a more highly developed compositional environment, looking forward to the use of the computer as a tool for articulating time.
