Abstract:

Although this historical article concerns, for the most part, Varèse’s thoughts on the liberation of sound in an orchestral context (the tempered system), it does contain a section concerning the electronic medium in which Varèse discusses how this medium offers composers almost endless possibilities of musical expression.
