Abstract:

In this book, the author reveals the musical possibilities and restraints offered by the medium of sonic composition. He discusses the general properties of different kinds of sound materials and the effects that certain processes of transformation can have on these. He suggests what might be fruitful approaches for artists who wish to explore the domain of new sonic possibilities that have been opened up by sound recording and computer technology. The book is supported by an appendix in which the details of compositional processes are presented in a diagrammatic format, and includes a CD containing sound examples that illustrate compositional techniques.
