In this article, French composer Tristan Murail philosophically reflects on the compositional practices of spectral music. He contextualises his discussion through his own compositional experiences, with reference to his works, Désintégrations (1983), 13 Couleurs du Soleil Couchant (1978), Gondwana (1980), and Vues Aériennes (1988).
