Abstract:

In this article, the authors each explore an aspect of Larry Austin’s extended composition for radio broadcast: Transmission Two: The Great Excursion (TT:TGE) (1990). Charles Boone examines the work for its musical and dramatic interest and its significance as a hybrid of Hörspiel. Larry Austin (the composer) outlines his compositional approach. Xavier Serra explains the technical/theoretical genesis of the work’s computer-generated speech sounds.
