In this paper, the authors note that the novelty of laptop performance is beginning to fade as audiences are becoming more critical of the lack of a sense of active creation during performance, and a visual connection between the laptop musician’s actions and the audio output. With the aim of addressing this issue, the authors present their progress in the design of a software interface that prohibits the use of predefined control sequences, but that facilitates the live creation of control sequences during performance through freehand drawing, a process that is also made visible to the audience.
