In this article the author proposes an aesthetic for the electronic music of the 1960s and 70s. Next to this, he makes comparisons between the fundamentals of electronic and of traditional music. The emerging conflict is investigated not only in terms of formal aesthetic criteria, but also in terms of reception issues. Furthermore, ‘noise’ is defined as an aesthetic object.
