This book examines radio music of the 1950s and the activity of the Studio di Fonologia settled in Milan. In the first chapter the author analyses the relationship between radio and the (then) new electroacoustic music genre: thanks to radio, a new listening approach was needed and so musical laboratories started musical and technological experiments. The second and third chapters trace the history of the Paris, Cologne and Milan laboratories, and their technological-aesthetical connections. The fourth chapter examines the compositional process in Notturno by Bruno Madera (for magnetic tape), and highlights problems concerning the preservation of this type of music.
