In this article Hiller offers his views concerning the then current state of play of computer music sound synthesis. He focuses on the computer’s abilities to: 1) synthesise sound, 2) create musical scores, 3) analyse music and 4) compose music. Technical foundational principles as well as the current issues related to these four areas are presented and subsequently illustrated.
