This article focuses on the work and thinking of Conlon Nancarrow, composer born in the United States who lived most of his life exiled in Mexico. It includes a basic description of Nancarrow’s project to compose a “Player Piano Concerto” (“Concierto para pianola”), whrere a computer, acting as conductor, would indicate multiple independent and simultaneous tempi (up to 8) to the different instruments of the orchestra.
