Abstract:

In the brief article, the author offers his thoughts concerning the role of improvisation in the live performance of electronic music. He notes that most practitioners of live electronic improvisation are woefully behind their ‘acoustic’ colleagues as regards responsiveness, flexibility and what might be called musical ‘presence’ in performance. His remedy for this calls for a greater focus on practicing and on the unity between gesture and sound, which with electronic instruments must be imagined and then realised.
