In this chapter, the author addresses some fundamental questions concerning how the structure of a compositional process determines the form of the musical work the process produces. He then offers an example of what he terms ‘rule-based’ composition through a detailed description of the formal processes utilised in the composition of Furies and Voices (1989-1990).
