In this article, the author offers an overview of acoustic ecology, including the pioneering work of R Murray Schafer, the World Soundscape Project, and the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology. He exemplifies the field through a discussion concerning the music and soundscapes of Hildegarde Westerkamp, Peter Cusack, Doug Quin, David Dunn, and the Earthear label.
