In this chapter, the author addresses what he perceives as an impoverishing of the musical listening experience. He argues that most forms of music are now used merely as a means of distraction and that this is contrary to the past role of music in traditional societies as a primary social integrating mechanism. He exemplifies his discussion through examples of his own works, categorised in two sections: environmental performance works, and hybrid soundscape compositions.
