Abstract:

Ungeheuer’s book is primarily concerned with the influence of the information theoretician, Werner Meyer-Eppler (1913-1960), in the early years of electronic music in (West) Germany. The concept of “electronic music” was introduced by Meyer-Eppler in 1949. In minute the author details the influence Meyer-Eppler’s lectures held at a number of conferences have had, for example the lecture, “The problem of timbre in electronic music” that was given at the International Summer School for new music in Darmstadt in 1950. The book includes a CD with sound examples of early experiments in speech synthesis and electronic music from Meyer-Eppler’s archives.
