In his article, the author presents the results of a literature survey describing the mechanisms which enable visually impaired people to perceives features in environmental space. The conclusion being that such sensory mechanisms are highly reliant on sound. The author further concludes that the relationship between impaired vision and sensitivity to subtle aspects of architectural and environmental acoustics is psychological rather than strictly physical, as visually impaired people rarely develop mechanically improved hearing.
