Abstract:

In this article, the author reflects on fieldwork carried out in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary in which he studied patient experiences of the hospital soundscape. His findings suggest that the hospital soundscape is central to the patients’ experience of themselves as ’patient selves’, giving rise to a sonically constructed sense of self.
