This book traces the evolution of computer music focusing on the theme space vs. timbre. It introduces John Chowning’s spatial research, the results of timbre and perception experiments by J.C. Risset and S. McAdams, the Sonic Research Studio, the real-time implementations by G. Di Giugno and musical works by P. Boulez (Répons), L. Nono (Prometeo) and T.
