The author analyses the concept of timbre following A. Schoenberg’s theory: electronic music allows solutions only introduced in the “Harmonielehre”. The article shows that Stockhausen not only succeeds in creating a series of acoustic timbres which previously were only possible in an electronic music context, but also generates totally new frequency associations and correlated musical structures. Schatt analyses 5 instrumental groups used in the piece, their combinations and concatenations of acoustic timbres and/or ring modulates timbres, and demonstrates Stockhausen’s initial aim: a well balanced connection between Mathesis and emotio.
