Abstract:

In this article the author describes the electronic aspects of Noms des airs, una discesa nel suono d’Orfeo (1994) and Lohengrin II – Disegni per un giardino sonoro (2004) by Salvatore Sciarrino. They both are examples of the “imaginary theatre” by Sciarrino, that is they are conceived for environments that are not like those for the performance of traditional musical theatre, these are environments where the listener can choose his/her own personal listening trajectory and physical movement in space. The musical material of Noms des airs is taken from the work La favola di Orfeo (1932) by Alfredo Casella. It took place in the historic cellar Cantine del Redi (XV century) in Montepulciano, and it is the result of the sound fragmentation and alteration of the original composition. The listener does not recognise the original material, but is guided instead by a metaphoric sonorous descent into hell. Lohengrin was set in the garden of Villa Ruffolo (Ravello). Utilising a live electronic system, whose loudspeakers were settled in different points of the garden, this was was a strategic decision for providing continuity and homogeneity to the invisible action. A parallel action is noteworthy: the two works were broadcast live and personally realised by the composer, who in that way suggested one possible listening trajectory.
