Abstract:

This article is a short introduction to the UST (Unités Sémiotiques Temporelles: Temporal Semiotic Units), an analytical theory of the MIM (Laboratoire Musique et Informatique de Marseille). The author briefly presents the project’s origin, the research itself, UST examples, UST’s role in composition, analysis, and performance, and relationships with the graphic arts - the USST (Unité Sémiotiques Spatio-Temporelles: Spatio-Temporal Semiotic Units).
