Abstract:

Dans son introduction, Barry Truax compare la synthèse granulaire à la synthèse par modulation de fréquences (le modèle de synthèse dominant actuellement). Il explique comment la synthèse granulaire permet à l'utilisateur de créer en même temps des sons et des structures (contrairement à la synthèse FM), de concevoir de nouveaux instruments de composition et d'élaborer un discours musical riche. Il décrit ensuite les différentes stratégies de composition et analyse des extraits de ses œuvres utilisant la synthèse granulaire : Riverrun (1986), The Wings of Nike (1987), Tongues of Angels (1988), Beauty and The Beast (1989), Song of Songs (1992), Pacific (1990), Dominion (1991) et Basilica (1992).
