Fin dai primi sviluppi degli strumenti elettronici, lo studio dei mezzi e dei modi con cui l’uomo può interagire con una macchina nel fare musica hanno rappresentato un campo di ricerca di grande interesse. Per questo motivo, il termine Strumenti interattivi è utilizzato in maniera a volte imprecisa, perché comprende una grande varietà di ricerche e attività.

Ogni potenziale sistema che permette di inserire dati in un sistema, per ricavarne una risposta musicale significativa può essere considerato un controllo. In senso molto largo, un sistema composto di un controllo che attraverso una forma di comunicazione mette in congiunzione qualsiasi altro componente (MIDI, convertitori, software) con qualsiasi mezzo di produzione o trasformazione di suono rappresenta uno strumento interattivo. Spesso questi controlli si presentano combinati ai sensori, per esempio ai sensori di movimento. Guanti, macchette, giochi, solo per citare alcuni esempi, possono essere costruiti o modificati per essere degli strumenti musicali. Anche uno strumento musicale tradizionale può venire modificato con l’aggiunta di sensori, in modo da permettere il controllo di altre dimensioni, oltre al controllo convenzionale dello strumento da parte del musicista, come la modificazione del suono generato. Questi ultimi a volte vengono chiamati Strumenti estesi.
