Acronimo di Musical Instrument Digital Interface. Indica un protocollo standard che permette la comunicazione di strumenti elettronici e sistemi che possiedono un’implementazione MIDI. Si tratta di una tecnologia molto fruttuosa nel campo della musica elettroacustica che usa sequencers e sistemi di controllo degli eventi. Gli strumenti MIDI permettono di inviare e ricevere messaggi che utilizzano lo stesso protocollo. Le interfacce MIDI consentono di connettere uno strumento MIDI a un computer che può a sua volta controllare un qualsiasi altro apparecchio MIDI. I controlli utilizzati sono potenziometri o altri tipi di controlli disponibili nei sintetizzatori utili a modificare i parametri del suono con messaggi MIDI (per esempio controllori a soffio, pedali ecc.).

Editor. Programmi per la preparazione ed elaborazione di musica in termini di sequenza di eventi che generano messaggi Midi per il controllo degli strumenti; Expander. Generatori ed elaboratori di suono; Controller. Strumenti generatori di messaggi Midi.
