Disciplina fondata sullo studio della fisica dei suoni e della loro diffusione tramite mezzi e ambienti.

Parte della fisica che studia il suono e le sue caratteristiche. Dal greco akouein, ascoltare. Comunemente è lo studio del suono e dei suoi comportamenti nei vari mezzi ed ambienti in cui esso si propaga, comprendendo gli effetti di assorbimento, riflessione, interferenza, rifrazione, diffrazione. In senso più ampio l’acustica è la fisica del suono trattata in tutti i suoi aspetti. Fino all’inizio del XX secolo, ‘suono’ ed ‘acustica’ si riferivano alle vibrazioni elastiche ed alle onde sonore nel campo udibile dell’uomo: i territori dell’acustica oggi sono invece connessi con vibrazioni e onde non associati direttamente o indirettamente con i processi uditivi.
