This term as a category of electroacoustic music relates musics by conception and technique rather than aesthetic impulse. It covers a diverse range of aesthetic approaches that conceptualise music from the starting point of the grain of sound. It is therefore concerned with granular synthesis/resynthesis techniques, either in the studio or live in real-time performance, and could be used as a term to describe anything from glitch electronica to the activities of Barry Truax and Curtis Roads.
