Free Music

Musicology of Electroacoustic Music [MEM]  >  Discourse within Electroacoustic Music  ]

Term originally coined by Percy Grainger to describe music without fixed pitch, rhythm or timbre, created on homegrown technology and featuring gliding tones reminiscent of "wind in the telegraph wires". In Internet terminology, music that is free to the user in the same way that ’freeware’ or free software is available for unrestricted download. This represents a utopian, anarchic vision of freely available music creation, copying and distribution, independent of commercial imperatives.
