Classification of Sound

Musicology of Electroacoustic Music [MEM]  ]

Sounds being classified can be of use both to the makers and listeners of electroacoustic music. Such attempts, of which there have been too few until this point, were created to assist in compositional approaches as well as the analytical experience/reception. Examples include Schaefferian theory, Wolfgang Thies’ "Typologie der Klänge" which used adjectival sonic descriptors (W. Thies-Grundlagen einer Typologie der Klänge, Hamburg: Verlag der Musikalienhandlung Karl Dieter Wagner, 1982) and more formal typologies based on physical sound characteristics or types of sound objects.
