A technique based on a unit often found on synthesizers which allows for a periodic ’capture’ of a frequency along a dynamic waveform which is held until the next ’sample’ is taken. When the waveform that is followed is at a low frequency, predictable melodic patterns are evolved; whereas a higher frequency will normally generate random patterns.
